In coaching and training others to develop their home businesses, I employ a method called “Tracking.” This, in its simplest terms, means paying attention to your daily actions and marking a tally when you complete a particular task. We know there are certain activities that result in achieving success. The more of those activities you do, the more success you’ll have and the faster it will come.

Tracking or paying attention allows you to see which daily actions you are devoting the majority of your time to and determining if that is the most productive use of your time. This helps you to analyze whether you have balance in your business, shows you what your strengths are, what your weaknesses are, areas that you may be avoiding, and pinpoints where you may need to obtain additional training and education.

It’s easy to be “doing” the business and think you have been busy all day with something – but is that something what you need to be doing to move to the next level in your business? Well, tracking makes you aware of whether you are on the right track or not. Is your “working” working? Or are you wasting your time on a lot of activity that isn’t gonna make you money?

“We must be careful that the business we build does not become mere busyness.” Al Watts

When I encounter speed bumps in my business, the first thing I do is evaluate my tracking. The facts don’t lie. More than anything, tracking is an accountability tool. It keeps me honest. After reviewing my daily activity history and personally seeing the lack of concentrated, productive effort, it becomes hard to tell my business partner, “Well, the reason I didn’t sponsor anyone this month is because I didn’t do what I know is necessary to be successful with that. Oops, I thought I was working well, but my tracking shows I spent too much time on reading emails and not enough time on sharing the news of my business opportunity with new potential partners.”

“It is not only what we do, but also what we do not do, for which we are accountable.” Moliere

After asking our team to “Get Honest” with whether they were being consistent in doing the activities we have outlined as essential for success, I received an email from one partner that was so telling for me and a revelation for her. And I think she hit it right on the nail with why people DON’T do the tracking. I was proud of her for being honest and open enough to discover that for her self. I’d like to share some of her insightful thoughts with you.

“I started my tracking full force yesterday and now I can tell you WHY I am not into it. The reason I did not start Monday is because I did nothing with my business except I did talk to a distributor in IM about setting up a time to train her on our new system and how to use it. And I did respond to another distributor’s email about some questions she had. So I guess I should have tracked these things, but I pulled out the tracking sheet and said ‘What’s the use, I came no where close to doing many of these things I needed to do.’ Which I know does not matter, but I was disappointed.

So basically, why am I not into this tracking like I should be? The answer is because I see the areas I am lacking in and it scares me. I thought I was doing okay, but I see now I can be doing better.”

Then my excited response to her about her new found knowledge of the situation.

“EXACTLY — that is WHY we do it, to hold ourselves accountable.

I guarantee at the end of the day I will be tired — I mean I am a full time, stay at home mom, wife, home manager, landlord and business owner. So activity is no problem … I’ll be busy, for sure. BUT did what I DO move my business forward?

Yes, we do have to learn the FINE art of balancing all those roles. But one should never be at the sacrifice of any other. They are all important.

It IS scary — and I think you have hit upon something far more important than the reasons that are being given by others. Those reasons for not doing the tracking and the required activities seem to be ’socially acceptable.’ But for one to say, ‘I am not doing it because I see my own failure’ is HUGE. I commend you for recognizing that yourself and then being willing to tell us.

But the good news is – aren’t you glad you see that for yourself? Do you want a year to go by not KNOWING you aren’t doing the action steps that it takes to be successful? You don’t want to wake up that day and say, ‘Why haven’t I moved to the next promotion level … I have been busy after all?’

So see it now, wrap yourself around your revelation, hit the fear head on — and be ‘woman’ enough to accept full responsibility for what you have done and what you haven’t done. To me the tracking is about honesty. Be honest with yourself — that is the only way you’ll hit the big money.

Every day is a new day and we get the blessing of starting over. So start over.

And honestly, there is no absolutely right way of tracking, so don’t be afraid of it. It is about you doing the counting of points for your activities consistently over time to see that you are making improvements to your efforts. That is all it really is.

I hope that all makes sense — I am not trying to be harsh. I am just really excited that you discovered this. It isn’t about being accountable to us, but accountable to yourself. Be honest with yourself.

It’s okay if you don’t do the necessary action steps, but then be willing to say I didn’t do what was required to take it to the next level. As we say in our trainings — NO excuses. Yep, they will be there — there will be reasons why we have trouble, but don’t make them excuses. Cause if you want the ultimate success you gotta do the work.

And I know you CAN do it. I believe in you!

“The vast possibilities of our great future will become realities only if we make ourselves responsible for those realities.” Gifford Pinchot
