Desire, THE most important quality

Today, as I was thinking about why a business partner (let’s call her Leah) has decided to quit after only a few months, I got an introduction email from a new team member (let’s call her Kim). It’s ironic that the common theme between my thoughts and her email was the concept of DESIRE. But one distributor has it and one does not.
Despite my belief that Leah could be very successful in network marketing, she wasn’t. She has the necessary and desirable skills — a degree in teaching (cause we know that network marketing is more about teaching than selling and that teachers do very well in this profession), work history in human resources, supervisory experience, is very out going and not afraid to talk to people, has a large network of friends and co-workers — thus Leah has the people skills and contacts. So what happened?
The answer lies in the new distributor’s introduction. When asked, “Kim, what made you want to begin a home-based business?” her reply was, “I wanted to start a home based business because I wanted to be able to stay home with my kids and be able to create financial independence. Which, is something I knew I would never be able to do working a minimum wage job.”
Okay, so Leah said the same thing, “I want financial independence.” So what’s the difference?
Well, Kim goes on to say, “When it all boils down to it, DESIRE is what made me want a home based business. Desire to be with my kids. Desire to have more time and freedom. The desire to live a life I wouldn’t normally be able to live otherwise.” WOW! Those are some powerful words.
The dictionary defines Desire as “a longing or craving, as for something that brings satisfaction or enjoyment.”
Author, Wilfred Peterson believed, “Success is focusing the full power of all you are on what you have a burning desire to achieve.”
Napoleon Hill similarly states “There is one quality that one must possess to win, and that is the definiteness of purpose, the knowledge of what one wants and a burning desire to achieve it.”
Ayn Rand, a Russian writer, stated, “A desire presupposes the possibility of action to achieve it; action presupposes a goal which is worth achieving.”
The starting point for all achievement is a well defined desire. And when you know WHAT, specifically, it is that you desire, and you desire it with a burning passion, then you take purposeful action, the goal becomes achievable.
Adversity and failure can be overcome if you have a strong enough desire to succeed. You need a strong enough desire to find the self discipline to stick with it no matter what, the discipline to work your business diligently every day, the discipline to give up immediate gratification and yes, the need to sometimes sacrifice — in exchange for the achievement of your dreams.
I don’t know if Kim has the same ‘resume’ of professional skills as Leah, but I do know that her chances at success in this candle business are greater simply because she has a DESIRE — a desire to create a better life for herself and her family.
