I have never been a big fan of garage sales, don’t host them, don’t shop at them. But as you know with young children, there is so much STUFF – clothes and toys and books and bikes, etc. And they grow out of it all so fast and then there is more stuff. So I was collecting it all thinking I would have a garage sale. Most of it is in great condition and would be a ‘prize’ for the savvy garage sale shopper.
But I am much more about organization, keeping things neat and orderly, and cleaning out the chaos than the money. Ha, and you would know that if you read my post on personality types. So as I see the massive mounds of stuff grow, it makes me uneasy and feeling cluttered. I am one that truly believes a cluttered environment lends to a cluttered mind and a cluttered mind lends to stress.
So what is my reaction to eliminate the stress – give it away! My first reason is to clear the chaos. But then I am also reminded of how much has been given to my family by others. As we have received and been blessed by others generous gifts, we are honored to do the same.
But then I’ll have the twinge when out shopping and be reminded of how much we spent for some of these children’s toys and think, “Dang, I should have sold that instead of given it away.”
So I was excited to listen to one of my mentors, James Ray, during my daily training sessions of “The Science of Success,” talk about “The Power of Giving” – one of his principles to success. He references the Boomerang Principle:
What you sow, you reap.
What goes around, comes around.
You know what you put out will come back to you.
The Law of Cause and Effect states that the good that you give must come back to you, if you do it with a grateful and sincere attitude – one of not seeking something in return.
This was all kind of old school knowledge. But what REALLY got my attention was his explanation of our mentality. That when you hoard or try to hang onto things that are of no use or value to you any longer, you are telling your subconscious mind that you have a mentality of scarcity.
Ooh, wrong road to travel down. We want to create a mentality of abundance, cause “like attracts like.” By freely giving, you tell your subconscious that you have more than enough and that you live in total abundance. You tell it that you don’t have to be stingy because the universe has an unlimited supply of whatever it is you need.
The next concept James Ray talks about is the Vacuum Law of Prosperity. That is if you want to bring something new into your life, you must make room for it. Ha, I can’t wait to tell my husband that I was right. I make him throw out the old pair of jeans when he wants to get a new pair. In opposition to his thinking, that he shouldn’t throw anything out, cause he might need it one day. No way, even if one day he should need it again, he’d never be able to find it in all the stuff he wants to hoard, so he always goes out and buys a new one anyways.
So show your subconscious mind that you are able to give away things that no longer represent who you are, things that no longer serve you. Show that you have faith in the abundance you desire by making a space in your life for it. Don’t show that you are afraid to let something go for fear that you won’t be able to replace it. Be prepared to receive the good, make room for it.
James Ray finishes the training with this great quote from Winston Churchill, “We make a living by what we get … We make a life by what we give.”
I have reconciled in my own mind that it IS good to give. I am reminded that ‘great achievers are first great givers.’ So I have an old living room set I need to go give away now.
