My company allows us to build our home businesses the way that we choose — whatever fits our personalities, our lifestyles, our budgets. We have the option of retailing, fundraising, or team building, or better yet, a combination of all three.
By choice, I am a team builder because it fits my desires and vision to mentor other business owners and it fits my lifestyle of being a full time stay at home mom. But also I prefer to have the work I do one time pay me over and over.
I recognize that selling product can be like a job. I do make money when I sell my product, but I have to continue to work in order to continue to get paid when I use this method of growing my business.
On the other hand, when I assemble a team of business partners and we each introduce our company to a few others who also want to work from home and use high quality gourmet products, our time and investment is leveraged. So I don’t have to work if I need to take some time off and I’ll still receive my paycheck each month.
While my long term objective is to be a team builder, I don’t ever discount the importance of retailing my product along the way for a couple of reasons:
1 – my satisfied retail customers often decide to begin businesses of their own
2 – my retailing helps pay the cost of my team building
So my short term goal of retailing product to a small repeat customer base helps me realize my longer term goal of building a solid team of business partners. I need BOTH methods to grow my business to its full potential.
I have been reminded of this over the last week, as I have done retail shows that paid for my team building advertising. I know I must invest in advertising to find new partners to expand my business. So I have been pleased to write checks this week for my home business ads after depositing those profits from my retail sales.
So if you desire to build a team but are on a tight budget (or not), don’t discount the importance of retailing your product in order to pay for your team building efforts.
